This assignment asks you to write a 4-6-page argument-driven essay in response to the following prompt:
During World War I, hundreds of thousands of Black Americans left the South for new opportunities in northern industrial cities. This kicked off a decades-long migration that would come to be called the Great Migration. What motivated the migration? What did migrants find in the North?
In responding to this prompt, you will draw your evidence and build your argument from the five primary sources PROVIDED ON THIS PAGE. You are required to use all five.
You can also utilize the following secondary source for contextual information:
Tyina Steptoe, “The Great Migrations and Black Urban Life in the United States, 1914-1970,” in Oxford Research Encyclopedias: American History (2018)
NOTE: This secondary source is provided to help with context—dates and basic information—not to provide the argument or content for your essay.
Your response to the prompt should be 4-6 pages long, double-spaced, with 1″ margins. You should write in 12pt Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman font. Citations should be in Chicago-style footnote form. The only thing that should be in the header is your name. The assignment is due by 5pm on Friday, November 19. Your submission should be in a Word Document (.doc or .docx) format. Here’s how to save a Google Doc as a Word Doc. Here’s how to save a Pages document as a Word Doc.
You will be evaluated on the quality of your argument, your ability to build that argument from primary source evidence (in part by integrating relevant quotations), and your ability to situate your argument and evidence within the relevant historical context. Keep in mind that I am not evaluating your general knowledge of the Great Migration, but rather on your ability to make an argument about the Great Migration from the provide primary source material. For that reason, you should AVOID ALL OUTSIDE SOURCES—they will only harm your ability to complete this assignment.
