Your genre analysis might
Define a specific genre or, in making definitions, differentiate between multiple genres.
What makes a genre what it is? (Lots of people might argue over what a “real” or “authentic” use of a genre is.) What is the genre’s history? Which artists are major practitioners of the genre, and what does their work mean in terms of these first 2 questions?
In making definitions, what do you find are some connections between genres that are not usually recognized? What common ground could Tragedy and Comedy share, for example?
discuss the ways in which a specific artifact does or does not fulfill the conventions of a genre
Take just one artifact of a genre (one film, one album, one book, one play, one thinkpiece, one academic essay) and explain how it fulfills or subverts or modifies the conventions of that genre.
consider the relationship between specific genres and contexts
What material or social contexts led to the creation of, perhaps even the need for, an expression via music/film/art? Maybe the invention of this genre did the opposite and influenced culture in a big way.
analyze different substantiations of a single genre
how did one genre influence or even lead to the creation of another? What really makes two subgenres so different from each other (like, for instance, the horror movie vs. the psychological thriller)? Maybe in differentiating between two genres or subgenres, you might find that there are artists, directors, or writers who mix, combine, or alter genres in their work to make something altogether unique or that defies categorization.
make an argument that a certain genre has progressed or regressed.
Have horror films gotten worse or better? Have certain genres of rap improved with their growth over time, or has its commercialization led to less authenticity?
